Root Characteristics : 


► Root is defined as the descending part of the plant axis.
► It develops from the radicle of the embryo during seed germination.
► It is positively geotropic.
► It is positively hydrotropic
► It is negatively phototropic.
► They do not show nodes and internodes
► Roots can also be ariel

Categories Of Root
❍ Main root or primary root
❍ Secondary roots - Develop from primary roots
❍ Tertiary roots -  Develop from secondary roots

Function of The Root


► The main functions of the roots are fixation or anchorage of the plant body into the soil
► Absorption of water and minerals from the soil
► Storage of food materials e.g. carrot, radish
► Synthesis of plant growth regulators
► Some roots help in exchange of gases (Respiration) e.g. Rhizopora, Sonneratia
► Sometimes roots also take part in vegetative reproduction e.g. Sweet potato.
► Aerial roots absorb moisture from the air e.g. Orchids.
► Thus modified roots perform different functions.
